Amazon Product Manager Interview Experience — Untimed OA Then an HM Phone Screen on Delivery-Driver Metrics

Sharing my hiring-manager phone screen. I mass-applied to non-tech positions at Amazon, and the recruiter emailed pretty quickly to schedule an OA. After passing the OA, there was a 45-60 minute phone screen with the HM. The OA was a work simulation and work style assessment — there were videos and emails simulating a typical work environment, and it wasn't timed! So just relax and take your time with it.

One question asked how you'd evaluate a delivery driver's performance. Just looking at delivered packages and time isn't enough — you need more information to evaluate it properly, because the next question then gave more information. Weather turned out to matter a lot.

It started with me introducing myself, then the interviewer introduced himself. First he asked what impact he thought my experience could bring to Amazon. I was a bit thrown off, so I asked the HM to clarify the question, and the HM ended up giving a brief introduction of his own team along the way. Friendly reminder: you really need to be familiar with what teams and functions Amazon currently has, otherwise you can't even bluff your way through it. Then he asked two behavioral questions. When you tell your stories, you absolutely must use STAR, otherwise the interviewer can't take good notes. Later in the interview he asked me directly whether I was familiar with STAR...

  1. How do you deal with ambiguity at your work?
  2. Tell me a time you were in a completely different position from your manager or colleague. How did that work out?

In the end I scraped through the phone screen.
