The process began with a quick recruiter screen that was mostly about logistics and conversation. We covered my background, past work, and interest in the role. Sometimes a small technical question came up. In one screen it was basic cantilever-beam knowledge; in another, there was no technical question at all.
The recruiter also asked about fit and expectations, including team matching and motivation. Those early calls felt friendly and easy to navigate, with the next step scheduled clearly afterward. Even when I raised the effect that relocating could have on salary relative to housing costs, the discussion stayed professional.
What struck me was how much that early stage determined the rest of the process. In one experience I did not move on, and I thought my account of my background had not landed as well as it needed to, despite answering the few technical questions correctly. It felt like light gatekeeping: when the recruiter screen and broad fit clicked, I progressed; when they did not, it ended quietly.
