Anthropic Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience — Referral, Product-Focused System Design and an $850k Offer

A while back I landed a software engineer offer at Anthropic.

Total compensation comes to about $850k USD.

During prep I studied from online material and also did three mock interviews. The mocks mostly helped me feel steadier about system design, although the design round I got at Anthropic looked quite different from the typical format people practice.

One thing I'd pass on: people generally invest too little in getting ready for interviews and in their careers, and I caught myself doing the same. I had a ski week planned that would have cost $1k or more, and I hesitated to use that week of leave for prep and put the money toward mocks instead, even though the job could change my life. I'm happy with how I chose. Giving this more time, leave, energy and money than the next person is an easy way to get ahead of them.

About me

  • Senior engineer, roughly 6 years of experience
  • Started out across the full stack, more backend-focused lately
  • Working on AI applications now, and before that I led a team at a scale-up
  • Computer science degree from a university in the global top 3

The process
A contact of mine referred me. Neither recruiters nor applying directly had led anywhere.

The stages were:

  • CodeSignal online assessment
  • Recruiter conversation, 30 minutes
  • Coding screen, 1 hour
  • Onsite: one hour of coding, one hour of product/system design, one hour with the hiring manager (behavioral), one hour on culture
  • Reference checks

Speed is the main thing in the coding rounds: within the hour you have to pass actual test cases on a problem made of several parts. Anthropic mostly stays away from LeetCode-style problems. Expect practical tasks that resemble real work.

My design interview was almost entirely about product and involved barely any drawing, which I found notable. The interviewer and I worked through UX flows, data models and similar topics together in a shared Google Doc. What counted was how well I grasped what users need and whether I picked sensible, pragmatic designs from their point of view. It was a fun one.

The hiring manager conversation is a regular behavioral interview with nothing unusual about it. It's typically your would-be direct manager, so I'm guessing their focus differs by team. For instance, an infra-heavy position may press for more technical depth on earlier projects than a product-oriented one would.

Anthropic's culture round is notorious. It touches on your take on AI safety, your personal ethics, and whether you can change your mind and weigh other viewpoints. I loved it, and if you're a genuine match for the company I expect you'll enjoy it too. It came across as a spirited, probing discussion rather than a standard interview. My advice is to skip the flattery and say what you actually believe. For most questions I never felt there was an expected answer. They seemed to care about how open you are and how you think things through.

Timelines
Once you pass a stage, the recruiter shares a scheduling link, first for the phone screen and then for the onsite. You can only pick slots up to two weeks after the link was generated, which keeps the interview loop moving fast.

After the interviews, everything drags. My recruiter was excellent and told me early that things had gone well and the process was heading toward an offer. Anthropic does something atypical here, though: they ask for two references once the interviews are done, and only then does the offer go in front of the hiring committee. I waited about 10 days between my last interview and the recruiter presenting the offer.

Compensation
There is no pay negotiation at Anthropic, and no signing bonus, so beyond picking a start date there's little left to settle. Everyone at the same level and role receives the same offer.

The package is a flat base salary plus an RSU grant with a fixed dollar value, valid if you start within a few months. Starting later may change the number of units.

Benefits are very generous: monthly stipends for wellness and similar things that you can spend however you like. The health coverage and other insurance are the most comprehensive bundle I've come across so far, and I have no complaints.
