Just finished my HR call with Anthropic. It was a referral from a colleague, but honestly my background doesn't match the JD that well, so overall I got the sense she hadn't decided yet whether to move me on to the technical interview. The official line was that they'd decide in one or two days.
She asked me a bunch of questions:
- What does the team do
- You said you're a tech lead — what does your day-to-day work look like, and is there mentorship
- Why do you want to leave your current company
- What's different about Anthropic compared to other AI labs, for you
I was also still interviewing with OpenAI at the time, and at some point during the call it hit me that I really could not let her know that.
- What does AI safety mean to you
- What happens if AI isn't used properly
I don't think I answered that one well — she kept prompting me for more, like she wasn't hearing the answer she wanted.
- Has there been anything in your work or life that conflicted with your own personal morals
- Have you been following Anthropic's recent moves — are there things we've done that you think were right, and things you think were wrong
For the personal-morals question I honestly hadn't prepared at all, and I wasn't well prepared for the AI-misuse one either. Plus my background isn't a great match to begin with, so at this point it's just down to luck.
