Anthropic Software Engineer Interview Experience — A Serious 20-Minute AI Safety HR Screen

A former colleague referred me earlier, and recently a recruiter called me for an HR screen.

The recruiter did not smile at all and gave no introduction. The first thing I was asked was: why Anthropic?

Then came several more questions:

Was there anything in a recent Anthropic interview, article, or news story that I agreed or disagreed with?

Why was AI safety important to me?

Had I genuinely practiced AI safety in my previous work, and exactly how had I done it?

The recruiter kept following up and digging deeper throughout the conversation. That part lasted about 20 minutes. It felt much more serious and detailed than a typical HR screen, so I would recommend preparing carefully to discuss Anthropic, AI safety, and the company's recent developments.

During the final 10 minutes, the recruiter briefly introduced the rest of the interview process. The first round would be system design. Passing that would lead to a full loop, and the coding portion would test multithreading.

I also wondered whether a Python multithreading interview would mainly use problems such as a web crawler or image processing, or whether there were other common formats.
