BHP Software Engineer interview with timed recorded STAR responses

My first screening step was an online recorded interview with timed responses. The prompts mixed behavioral themes and scenarios, and I had a short preparation window before recording each answer. They covered teamwork, decision making, safety, and problem solving, and felt closely aligned with the company’s values.

The questions were short and direct, but the timing made it hard to think calmly. I used STAR-style answers for longer prompts because that made my responses clearer under pressure. The setting sometimes felt strange and less human than I expected.

After the recorded interview, I expected clearer next steps. Instead, I had an additional virtual conversation with HR and an onsite lead where the direction was hard to follow. The earlier parts were professional, but the recorded format was the toughest part. I did not get an offer and felt the format mattered as much as my answers.

Location: Australia. Overall feedback: neutral. Offer status: no offer.
