Capital One Machine Learning Engineer Interview Experience — Manager Round Ran Long After a Slow OA

This company is really annoying about it — you have to grind through an obnoxiously long OA before they'll even schedule the hiring manager interview. After I finished the OA, I actually had to remind the recruiter myself before they moved things forward.

Let me talk about the manager interview. It was basically pure conversation. The manager seemed like a nice guy. He mostly asked what I'm currently working on and had me go into detail on it, weaving in some behavioral questions while I talked through my project — for example, when I mentioned that the infra team caused a bug that I then had to go get resolved, he asked what I would do if I were on the infra team facing that same situation, and so on. He also asked if I'd ever had to deal with someone difficult to work with and how I handled it — fairly standard behavioral stuff. I hadn't started prepping behavioral answers for this round yet, so I just winged it.

It was scheduled for 30 minutes. He joined two minutes late, and then we ended up going almost 45 minutes — I had to tell him I needed to leave, so I didn't get a chance to ask my own questions. Overall the vibe felt okay, but he kept hinting that the scope of what I'd worked on wasn't quite big enough. Our team's projects just aren't that large in scope though, so there wasn't much I could do about that — if scope was going to be a dealbreaker, why bother interviewing me in the first place?
