I started with a recruiter conversation about how the recent IBM acquisition might affect hiring. The recruiter was transparent, but I came away with more uncertainty than clarity, especially about what the acquisition would mean for the day-to-day work in the Inside Sales role.
In the later interviews, I kept asking for specifics: how the role fit into the larger sales organization, what the KPIs would be, how the territory and internal alignment worked, and how success would be measured. I also asked what usually drove closed-won deals and what the main reasons for churn were. I was trying to understand the sales motion and strategy behind the scenes.
What threw me off was that the role never felt clearly defined for the current environment. The answers focused more on historical context than on a forward-looking structure.
By the end, I was told the role was being paused. The team members I spoke with were professional, but earlier communication about the uncertainty would have saved a lot of time. The hardest part was that the process had already gone so far before I heard about the decision.
