Headway Software Engineer interview: unclear onsite design expectations

My process started with a recruiter touchpoint, followed by a technical screen and then a three-round onsite. Scheduling and feedback were responsive, but the actual evaluation didn't line up with what I expected. The onsite design segment especially didn't feel like a classic system design round. The constraints made it hard to tell what direction they wanted, so I spent more time guessing than building.

The rest of the onsite followed the usual structure, with coding, system design, and behavioral interviews. I struggled to make progress when the prompts were vague. One technical depth exercise also caught me off guard because I wasn't fully comfortable with the networking concepts it implied, and I could feel myself losing momentum early.

The ending stayed with me. I was told I had passed the interviews, my references went through, and team placement conversations were underway. An offer discussion had even been scheduled. Then the process suddenly stopped, and leadership concerns were cited without much clarity. It felt like the decision came down to a "full picture" judgment that I never had a chance to address properly. I left disappointed and honestly a bit disrespected because the process didn't seem consistent about what mattered.

Location: United States. Overall feedback: Negative. Offer status: No offer.
