I started with a home assignment that was split into two parts. They estimated about six hours of work and gave me three days to complete it, so it felt manageable at first. The first part involved implementing something straightforward, along with smaller requirements such as writing a README and adding unit tests. Some of the solution requirements felt subjective and depended on the approach, which made them harder to measure.
The second part focused on code review. I had to find the main bug, write a deterministic test that reproduced it, and answer questions about what I found. The review was messy because there were so many bugs and issues. Covering everything took a lot of time, and answering the follow-up questions thoroughly took even longer.
I put in the time, but they didn't like my design from the first part, and that ended the process for me. The assignment was thorough, although the size and depth of the review component made it feel more like a mini project than a focused exercise. I was rejected. My main reflection afterward was that the expectations went beyond correctness. They also depended on how well their design preferences matched mine.
