OpenAI Software Engineer Interview Experience — Design Scope and Elevator Debugging

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Oct 2026
Technical Screenhard

My interviews included one design round and one coding round. The design prompt concerned a PC game store and launcher, including commerce, ownership, large downloads, and launch authorization.

I misunderstood the invitation to focus on selected areas. I began with distributing game files, then discussed entitlements when prompted. Near the end, the interviewer asked me to walk through the complete system because the overall flow remained unclear. I realized I should have outlined the whole architecture before exploring one or two areas in depth. My takeaway was to establish the core entities, APIs, and high-level design first.

The coding interview used an elevator simulation with supplied Python models and a simulation loop. I was still debugging the second part and never reached the third.
