My process began with a function-trace coding screen and a brief hiring-manager conversation. The onsite returned to my project in more depth, including its diagram, tradeoffs, and technical challenges.
The design round asked for a like/unlike counter, with detailed attention to database schema, Redis keys, and query patterns. For autocomplete coding, I used a trie without having prepared that particular problem. One small test failed, but the interviewer said the approach and implementation were sound, which I appreciated.
A director conversation followed the onsite. It felt like a fairly ordinary behavioral discussion. A few days later, the recruiter called with a rejection: the director considered my scope and impact insufficient for the team. The recruiter offered to look for another team.
I was frustrated that this mismatch surfaced so late in the process. At the time of writing, there was no confirmed alternative placement.
