I was exploring the market with about four and a half years of MLE experience. After a recruiter call, I had a September 30 phone screen on a topological-sort variant. On October 5, I learned I had passed and chose a virtual onsite for October 23.
The ML modeling round examined game recommendations from retrieval to ranking. The hiring-manager round covered behavioral questions, past projects, leadership, and practical details of my work. A separate round explored a project I was particularly satisfied with.
On October 28, the recruiter said the first two onsite rounds were positive but the project deep dive had mixed feedback. They proposed downleveling me to the highest IC3 tier, with an initial package around USD 460,000. Level mattered to me, so I decided not to continue.
The process felt generally smooth. For someone especially interested in the role, I recommended doing the project deep dive in person to help communication.
