I had a phone screen followed by a technical interview with two senior software engineers. The interview invite initially said "Backend Tech Screen." The night before, the recruiter sent an updated invite that kept the same time. I noticed the change while checking the details, then apologized for sending too many messages.
On the day of the interview, I got front-end questions instead. Only afterward did I realize that the updated invite actually said "Web Tech Screen," which made the whole thing feel like a bait-and-switch. I had spent a week studying Java and doing a lot of LeetCode, so much of that preparation felt wasted once the scope changed.
The interview didn't feel designed to trick me technically. It simply didn't match what I had prepared for. I wasn't offered the role, and the experience left me frustrated because the mismatch in scope mattered more than the technical difficulty.
