Sharing a rejection experience from Turo. The interview process itself was actually pretty good — I could tell that if I'd gotten in, I would have learned a lot. Unfortunately I still got rejected.
Round 1 was an HR screen. It was mostly going through my resume, and based on what was on there they'd ask some ML-related questions, like what's the difference between XGBoost and LightGBM.
Round 2 was a presentation, and before the presentation there was a take-home assignment. The main task was to research which features had the biggest impact on booking. I had to submit code and slides, and after submitting, they scheduled the presentation. The interviewer for this round was based in Paris — a nice person, but also very technical, and they'd dive really deep. You need to make sure you fully understand everything in your own presentation.
Round 3 was the onsite: ML + coding + stats. I didn't have much trouble with the ML technical part, but the last 25 minutes were all focused on business, and I wasn't very good at that — afterward I even asked ChatGPT, and its answer was pretty similar to what I'd said, so I'm still not sure what kind of answer they were actually looking for. The coding part was relatively easy: one data manipulation + plotting question, and one LeetCode easy. Stats started out fairly simple, basic textbook stuff, but got progressively more demanding, requiring a solid stats foundation beyond just the two-sample t-test — that's where I struggled, since my own job doesn't require that level of rigorous A/B testing.
