Last Friday I had my third-round interview for a Senior Program Manager role at Uber's San Francisco office.

Worth reading if you have a liberal-arts, business, or other non-tech background.

  • Your biggest, proudest project
  • A story backed by data and metrics
  • Uber Eats vs. DoorDash
  • Small case: a customer's delivery failed because the address was unclear...
  • Questions for me

The interviewer was great. None of the questions were particularly sharp, they were all within the range I had prepared for, and the follow-up questions were logical too. There was no pressure at all, and the interview felt good. The interview wrapped up Friday morning, and by the afternoon I heard back that I had passed. Next should be discussing the offer package.

Takeaways: if your spoken English is not great, do not be scared. For ops-type roles, the language bar is just being able to state the problem clearly and lay out your logic smoothly -- that is completely fine. It does not need to sound beautifully fluent or have a fancy accent. When you hit a question that is hard to answer, make sure to clarify it with the interviewer first, and if you really do not know, sincerely walk through your thought process. Most interviewers are not looking for a perfect answer -- they are looking at whether your reasoning holds up. This has worked for me again and again in interviews.
