Growth Strategy for Expanding One Highly Successful Food Truck
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
You own one food truck and business is booming. You want to turn it into a much larger business. How would you go about scaling it?
Explain how you would decide what to do first, which ways of growing you would weigh against each other, and how you would know the expansion is working.
```hint Find what the success rests on
Before choosing how to grow, work out what made this truck succeed and what currently limits it. Each way of growing keeps some of those strengths and puts others at risk.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- How does the success show up today: long lines and sell-outs, strong margins, a loyal local following, or people asking the truck to cater their events?
- What does the owner want from scaling: the most profit, a brand that could later be sold, or growth without losing control of the food?
- How much money and personal time can the owner put in, and is outside funding an option?
- Should growth stay in the current city at first, and do local permits limit where and how many trucks can operate?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- An account of what drives the current success and which constraint binds first (cooking capacity, location, the owner's time).
- A range of growth paths compared on capital, risk, speed and control over quality.
- A sequenced plan that tests demand cheaply before committing to fixed costs, plus the systems that let the business run without the owner at every service.
- Unit economics and metrics per truck or channel, with quality and cash guardrails.
- Risks such as diluted quality, cash-flow strain, permits and owner burnout.
### Follow-up Questions
- A second truck sells much less than the first. How do you work out whether the cause is the location, the crew or the concept?
- When would you open a restaurant instead of adding more trucks?
- When, if ever, would you franchise the concept rather than own every unit?
Overview: A product strategy interview question asking how the owner of a very successful food truck would scale the business. It tests finding what drives the success, comparing growth paths on capital, risk and control, sequencing a plan that validates demand cheaply, and choosing metrics and guardrails.
