Product to Relieve Amazon's Logistics Team After a Year of Rising Order Volume
Company: Amazon
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Amazon's order volume has been rising over the past year, and its logistics team is now running into problems keeping up. You are the product manager brought in to help that team manage logistics under the heavier load. What product would you recommend building, and how would you justify it?
```hint Find where growth breaks the chain
Logistics is a chain of stages between an order being placed and a package reaching the doorstep. Work out which of those stages degrade when volume rises, and who on the logistics team feels it first, before you propose anything.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Do we know where the strain shows up today (late deliveries, missed delivery promises, rising cost per package, staff overtime, warehouse backlogs), or is diagnosing that part of my task?
- Is the growth spread evenly across product categories and regions, or concentrated in certain places, item types or seasons?
- Who should the product serve: the internal teams that plan and run fulfillment and delivery, the drivers, or the customers waiting for packages, and is an internal tool an acceptable answer?
- Should the product make better use of the existing network, or may it also guide where new capacity such as buildings and vehicles is added?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A map of the logistics chain (forecasting and inventory placement, fulfillment, middle-mile transport, last-mile delivery, returns) and a reasoned call on which stages scale worst as volume grows.
- An explicit choice of one user inside the logistics organization and one primary problem, tied to what customers and cost feel.
- A concrete product with an MVP and a later phase, and a reason software beats, or complements, simply adding trucks and buildings.
- Success metrics linked to on-time delivery and cost per package, with guardrails for workers and customers.
- Risks such as forecast error, operator adoption, integration with existing systems and rollout timing around peak season.
### Follow-up Questions
- The holiday peak arrives before your product is fully rolled out. What would you do for the logistics team in the next few weeks?
- The operations staff you built the product for keep overriding its recommendations and planning by hand. How would you find out why, and what would you change?
- On-time delivery improves after launch, but cost per package rises. How do you decide whether the product is working?
Overview: A product manager case about Amazon's logistics team, which is struggling after a year of rising order volume. The candidate must diagnose where in the fulfillment and delivery chain growth causes breakdowns, choose one user and problem, recommend a product with an MVP, and define success metrics, guardrails and risks.
