Discord Interview Questions
Algorithms are a small part of interviewing at Discord. Across 14 recorded questions, system design leads with 5 and software engineering fundamentals follows with 4, while pure coding accounts for only 3, and just 2 questions open a runnable console. Production reasoning takes the place of the usual algorithm round. One question hands you a CPU spike in a live service and asks how you would locate the cause and stop the bleeding. Another drops to memory layout, on C++ alignment and ABI stability. A third has you design leader election on top of Redis leases, where the interesting part is lease expiry and what the old leader does during a partition. Data work appears as sessionization from a raw event stream, and one prompt asks you to demonstrate an AI-assisted coding workflow, which is newer than most of what candidates report anywhere. 11 of the questions come from Software Engineer loops, 8 were asked onsite and 3 in an HR screen. For its size this is a hard bank, 6 rated hard against 7 medium, and with 12 written solutions the preparation that pays is being able to talk through a system you have actually operated.
