Canva Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience — Five Rounds, Downleveled After a Map Coding Round

The first two rounds were AI coding and system design.

AI coding was an online editor system with very simple functionality. It was mostly just communicating with the interviewer.

System design was a book shop, and it covered a lot of payment and database design questions.

HR said both of these rounds were senior signal.

The last three rounds were done together.

BQ: Some standard questions, like the project I'm most proud of, and what I do when a project changes direction. HR said they were downleveling me... ridiculous.

Technical question && code review: A very easy round. I was shown a piece of dumb code and went through it step by step to find what was wrong with it. Really simple.

Coding: Implement a map. This round was the most ridiculous one. I told the interviewer about all the options and did all the follow-ups too, and in the end they still downleveled me. I'm really fed up. The interviewer's work history was also nothing special, which makes it even more absurd.

In the end it came down to the downlevel, and I turned it down.
