Confluent Frontend Engineer: JavaScript, React, and rolling-window data access

The process started with a recruiter chat and quickly moved into interviews tied to practical work instead of abstract puzzles. The recruiter call covered my background and expectations, after which I took a frontend coding challenge. That round focused on JavaScript and React. I also had a UI design discussion that moved into broader system basics before shifting to behavioral questions and team fit.

After the initial steps, I had a very different technical interview. It focused on implementing data access over a rolling time window. The interviewer gave little context for the problem and struggled with follow-up questions when I tried to clarify the inputs and requirements. I pushed through, got a working first-pass solution early, and spent the remaining time refactoring it for performance. I left that interview with a negative impression because the inconsistency was hard to reconcile with the rest of the process.

There were behavioral and manager rounds too, including a final conversation with the hiring manager that focused more on fit than technical depth. In my case, that conversation didn't flow well. The manager kept interrupting, made assumptions about what I understood about the company, and asked generic questions instead of really assessing my relevant experience.

I didn't move forward to an offer. My impression was that the process sometimes depended more on conversational chemistry and how clearly the interviewer communicated than on the quality of my technical work.

Location: Austin, TX. Overall feedback: Positive. Offer status: No offer.
