Datavant Software Engineer interview: debugging, coding, and system design

The process started with recruiter outreach. After a quick call about logistics and my background, I was invited to a coding round that focused entirely on debugging. We worked with a pre-existing file, and I passed that round, which moved me to an interview with the hiring manager. The manager was easy-going and spent real time answering my questions. They seemed distracted at the beginning because of something work-related, but the conversation soon settled into a relaxed, transparent discussion.

After that, the process moved into a more involved onsite-style set of interviews. I had a one-hour coding block with LeetCode-style questions that built on one another, followed by a one-hour system design interview tied to the company’s domain. The final interview was behavioral and did not follow STAR closely. It was more of a general walkthrough of my career. The recruiter had explained what to expect ahead of time, which reduced some of the uncertainty.

What stuck with me most was what happened after I finished everything. I was completely ghosted, even after I emailed to follow up. I never received any context about how the interviews went or whether there would be next steps.

Location: United States. Overall feedback: Negative. Offer status: No offer.
