I expected a straightforward process, starting with a hiring-team interview that went well, then further rounds with a VP and what was described as an AVP final step. The earlier conversations covered the same basic hands-on skill that later became an issue, and I felt I had answered it well.
After I thought the process was done, recruiting added a client interview. I was eventually rejected on the ground that I was not strong enough in that practical skill, even though I had already demonstrated it and had applied for a senior role. In a separate part of the experience, three technical rounds felt confident, but HR repeatedly reopened compensation negotiation and the final response cited budget. The no itself was difficult, but the changing path and lost time bothered me most.
