McKinsey & Business Analyst interview: case pace and opaque decisions

I applied online and waited for the Solve-style assessment and next steps. I advanced after the pre-screen, but the connection between the test and interview decisions wasn't clear to me. Even when I asked later, I couldn't fully understand the scoring and matching. At one stage, it seemed that both my assessment and resume affected whether I moved forward.

The live interviews paired personal experience questions, or PEI, with consulting cases. Some interviewers kept things moving without much gotcha-style pressure. Other parts were intense because of the pace and the amount of data and reasoning I had to manage. Cases covered market entry, profitability and broader strategy themes. I needed to solve the problem, explain it and adapt when the situation changed.

I didn't receive an offer. I still wasn't clear about what had ruled me out in the case interviews. The pace could be intense even with professional interviewers, and I felt the result depended on delivering both the reasoning and its explanation quickly.

Location: Maastricht. Overall feedback: positive. Offer status: no offer.
