After a recruiter call, I went into a coding interview where I did only limited coding and spent much of the time explaining my reasoning. The process moved step by step, and the recruiter followed up with feedback after that stage. That feedback helped me understand what they were looking for.
The next interview put even less weight on heavy coding and more on walking through my approach. Then came system design, where I struggled most. I could discuss systems, but I could not read the interviewer well enough to know the expected level of detail or direction. I thought my answers were good, yet I was not sure I was aiming at the right target.
I heard back after every stage, which made the process feel collaborative. I did not pass the final system-design step, and the rejection disappointed me because I thought I had communicated well but had not fully aligned with their expectations.
