Scale Software Engineer interview: card-game coding exercise

The recruiting flow felt friendly at first, then the technical work proved unlike a standard LeetCode trick question. The coding prompt used a card-game theme and was more about implementing many conditions than finding an elegant idea. It moved through multiple cases, so I had to track the logic and states carefully.

In the live coding round, I needed to work through those conditions quickly. The setup looked simple on paper, but the number of branches made it easy to lose time or miss a case. The interviewer was supportive and the overall tone was good, yet this was my first technical interview and I panicked. My performance did not match how I felt the opportunity should have gone.

The experience also varied by interviewer. In one instance, the person coding with me seemed distracted while I worked, which made it harder to judge what mattered. The questions themselves stayed consistent: card-game logic, lots of cases, and a need for correct working code quickly. I did not receive an offer. Afterwards, I felt the format had amplified my nerves as much as it tested my coding ability.

Location: San Francisco, CA. Overall feedback: Positive. Offer status: No offer.
