The first interview centered on live coding, and that shaped how I approached the rest of the day. It wasn't a verbal question-and-answer session where I could rely on talking through concepts. I had to implement the work and reason through it in real time.
The topics included data manipulation, EDA, and modeling. They were checking whether I could connect the statistics to the actual construction of models.
The live coding required comfort with the fundamentals. Basic probability and statistics came up implicitly as I made modeling decisions, and my data familiarity mattered when I worked with less structured inputs. The interview lasted about an hour and a half. The pace was tight, but there was enough time to get past the setup and actually do some modeling.
I left feeling that the bar was higher than I had hoped. I needed to implement correctly and think statistically while everything was happening live. The process ended in a rejection, and I wished I could have explained my modeling choices more clearly under time pressure.
