The interviews were organized, and the conversations themselves were pleasant. I genuinely liked the people I met. The structure had the same feel. The technical and communication portions weren't chaotic, and after each step I felt that the interviewers understood me.
The process hit a hard wall when compensation came up. Even though I was moving forward as a potential hire, the pay they offered was far below market for their data science positions, so I had to decline. They also wanted me to manage people, which made the mismatch feel even more jarring because they couldn't meet my current pay.
What surprised me most was how stark the gap was. The explanation didn't feel consistent with the firm's broader reputation. I was disappointed and upset by the decision, even though I had enjoyed the interview experience.
