My process started with a phone screening with another PhD. The conversation quickly turned to statistics and math questions, and it felt direct and high level. I also got the sense that the interviewer wasn't especially enthusiastic about the day-to-day work, so I asked directly about flexibility and how new hires were assigned. I was told the role wasn't very flexible and that initial group placement was somewhat random. Some people ended up on teams that didn't match their strengths.
The next day, I was invited to the first part of the virtual onsite, which had two back-to-back rounds. One focused on statistics and was led by a statistics PhD. The other covered machine learning with an interviewer whose background was similar to mine. I couldn't tell how familiar that interviewer was with the broader process, but the discussion still matched my area closely.
Overall, the process felt structured and fairly close to research work, but it didn't end with an offer.
Location: Berkeley, CA. Overall feedback: Neutral. Offer status: No offer.
