Canonical Software Engineer technical rounds on Linux and open source

Canonical·Software Engineer·Reported Apr 2026
Technical ScreenHard

I interviewed for the Software Engineer role and went through a two-track technical process in the middle of a longer interview sequence. One track focused on architecture and engineering depth. The other covered Linux, open-source topics, and platform fundamentals.

In the software architecture and engineering round, I was asked about architecture qualities, engineering methodologies, and how engineering teams work effectively. In the Linux systems and platform round, I covered operating systems fundamentals, sysadmin-style topics, shell familiarity, open source and licensing, and broader technology and industry trends.

I also discussed open source concepts and what inspired me to engage with them. I didn't move forward, but the interviews felt designed to test real engineering judgment, especially around Linux and open source.

Location: United States. Overall feedback: Neutral. Offer status: No offer.
