My loop started with a long setup: a recruiter call, followed by Zoom conversations that combined case-study work with situational questions. I spoke with a hiring manager and then had a more technical conversation with an engineering manager. After that came a presentation-focused stretch. I met with several product managers to present a case study and also had a culture discussion with product leaders.
The process was difficult, and the communication felt disorganized. After I cleared all the rounds we had originally discussed and was told they were moving ahead with an offer, I was asked to complete an additional interview with a VP of Product. That conversation hadn't been part of the earlier outline and changed the tone of the process.
Right after the VP conversation, I was told they were excited to extend an offer, but only at a lower level and with lower compensation than what had been discussed. I asked them to come back in writing with what I expected, within the market range for the level they were offering. After a short period of silence, the recruiter withdrew the offer and said my expectations were too high.
Walking away from that was shocking and uncomfortable. It left me questioning how compensation discussions actually played out internally.
