The interview started cleanly. I spoke with a recruiter first about my background and motivation, then met with the team's manager. The next step was a presentation on an engineering project, which led directly into technical questions. The conversation stayed easygoing rather than adversarial.
The technical discussion focused on engineering fundamentals and problem-solving. We talked about how I had approached hands-on work from earlier projects, how I think about teamwork, and the technical problems I might encounter in the role, especially in a ground-systems engineering context. Even when the questions became more specific, the tone stayed professional and easy to engage with. I also had time to ask about team culture and the role.
Overall, it felt like a smooth, structured process with multiple interviews and no sense that I was being tested just for the sake of it. I felt I had been able to explain my story clearly through my project work and the questions in the room, and the experience wasn't unusually stressful.
I still wasn't extended an offer. I was left thinking the gap was probably fit or prioritization rather than a failure to communicate my competence.
