Things usually moved quickly after I applied online. A recruiter or HR call would arrange an interview, which was brief and conversational. I spoke with someone from the store or hiring team about why I wanted to work there, how I'd handle customer-service situations, my availability and whether I could do the required tasks.
The usual format was a phone or virtual screen followed by an in-person conversation at the store. I discussed my experience and answered behavioral questions about going above and beyond or responding to an upset customer. Toward the end, they explained the daily work and confirmed expectations about the schedule, teamwork and physical demands. I didn't feel interrogated. It seemed as though they wanted to know whether I was comfortable, dependable and ready for the job.
In many of these experiences, I heard back quickly, sometimes with a same-day offer and sometimes shortly afterward. When there was an offer, background checks and orientation or training were scheduled. The process felt easy and safe, and the people were kind. Even though the pay wasn't perfect, I came away feeling good about the role.
