Network Effects, IV Assumptions, and a String-Matching Question

Last month I interviewed for a senior DS role at Uber, so I'm sharing it here. There were two technical rounds, each an hour long. They covered past projects and some case studies. Overall the difficulty wasn't that high, but I kept feeling like we weren't quite on the same wavelength — I probably wasn't giving the answers they were looking for. The first round was with a DS director, who asked a…

Passed the Technical Loop, Now in Team Matching

I'm a third-year PhD student in Econometrics and Quantitative Economics, working in Finance, Public Finance, and IO. I applied to Amazon pretty late this year, and since I was extremely busy this semester, I took the last possible deadline at every stage. I finally got the email confirming I'd passed the final technical interview on April 10, and I'm now officially in the team-matching phase. I w…

Phone Screen Pairs a Quick Coding Question with a Full A/B Testing Case Study

Before the interview, Uber's recruiter sends over some documents to help you prepare — a rough outline of the interview process, what knowledge you should study, and a bunch of links to help you get familiar with Uber's products. The first round is a one-hour phone screen. It starts with talking about the team and about yourself, then a 20-minute easy-difficulty coding question, then a case study…

Five-Round Onsite Loop Ends in Rejection

Fresh rejection writeup — I just did a virtual onsite for a Staff Data Scientist role at Pinterest. (1) Coding: SQL joining three tables to calculate, for each country, the category with the most impressions, and to calculate the heavy user rate (heavy user defined as active at least 4 days in the past week, with at least 3 features used on one of those days). There was also a simple Python quest…

Second-Round Onsite, One Interviewer Cancels via Late-Night Email

About a month or two ago I did my first round, which had two sessions, but I honestly don't remember what was covered. I guess I didn't do well, because there was no follow-up. Last week I suddenly heard that I'd be moving on to a second round. The second round was supposed to have three sessions, but the interviewer for one of them wasn't available and canceled on me by email in the middle of th…

An Onsite Derailed by a Disrespectful PM

Roblox is a really hot pre-IPO unicorn, and lately they're hiring a lot, so a lot of candidates are interviewing there. I get it, a lot of people want in, but I have to complain a bit — the experience was, if anything, worse than others I've seen on this board. After the IPO the stock will probably pop, but long-term it's genuinely hard to say. Phone screen 1: HM The hiring manager was pretty nic…

SQL Screen on the Classic Streaming and Viewing Tables

I did a mass application to Twitch's Graduate DS intern program. About two weeks later I got an HR phone screen — they asked why this company and three or four traditional behavioral questions, about 30 minutes total. A week after that came the technical round: 4-5 SQL questions, all built around two tables related to streaming and viewing. The questions were slightly different from ones already…

A 70-Minute OA With 14 Excel and SQL Questions

Timeline: applied mid-April, got the OA invite in early May. Duration: 70 minutes. Content: 14 questions total, with a big SQL question in the middle. The content matched what people have shared here in past years almost exactly — really grateful to everyone who shared before me, it was super useful for prepping! Questions 1-7: you download a csv file. The one I got was about an online ad platfor…

Wrestling with Product Case Questions on Subscription Metrics and P-Values

I've been interviewing with a few different companies lately and kept running into some pretty classic Product Case questions. I don't have a ton of interview experience, so I'm honestly not sure how good my answers actually are. Wanted to share them here and see what everyone else thinks. First, on success metrics — the standard playbook is obviously to start by asking the interviewer what the b…

Three of Four Onsite Rounds Done, Technical Session Pushed Two Weeks

I finished 3 out of 4 rounds of my VO (virtual onsite) yesterday, and while it's still fresh in my memory I wanted to share the experience. The reason I only got through 3/4 is that right after my third round, the recruiter told me the final Technical session would need to be rescheduled — it ended up getting pushed two weeks out, which feels like such slow torture (I originally wanted to knock o…

Two Screens, a Six-Round Virtual Onsite, and an Unofficial Offer the Same Day

My girlfriend has a friend who works at NVIDIA, and they referred me. About two weeks later I got my first round video interview. I want to talk about the mindset and the prep process for the whole interview loop — if that doesn't interest you, feel free to skip straight to the interview notes below. The most important thing: humble yourself and ask others for help (don't be shy about it — if you…

A SQL Screen Where Every Question Got Follow-Up After Follow-Up

Just finished my SQL interview, written on CodePad. It was pretty similar to a question set from the forum, but the interviewer kept hammering me with variant follow-ups on every single question... my brain was practically on fire. Every row in this table represents one minute, recording what a streamer was doing during that minute: Q1: total monthly hours streamed for each month, in order by mon…

The exam had 14 quiz questions total, with one big SQL question in the middle. The content was almost exactly like what people have shared here in past years — really grateful for those write-ups, they were super helpful for prep! Questions 1-7: you download a CSV file. What are interview experiences?

An interview experience is a candidate's own account of a hiring loop — not a question bank entry. It tells you the shape of the process: how many rounds there were, what each round actually tested, how long the gaps between them ran, and what the recruiter said at the end. That context is the part a question list cannot give you.

How to read them

Weight recent write-ups more heavily — interview loops change, often within a year. Read several for the same company and role rather than one: a single account tells you what one interviewer asked, while five tell you what the bar is. Note the outcome badge too, since a rejection write-up usually explains the gap far more precisely than an offer one.

Share your own

Every published experience earns 50 XP, and each of the first 3 likes it receives in a day earns you 10 XP more. Likes must come from established accounts; like-for-like swaps and likes from your own second account are not paid. Write it while the details are fresh — the round order, the exact prompts, and how much time you were given are what the next reader needs.
