The Voleon Group Data Scientist interview with OLS regression and Linux tasks

My interview began with a first round that felt like two parts combined. I was either given a dataframe or asked to do a simple join, then I had to run an EDA pass and perform an OLS regression in Python. I focused on p-values and R-squared, and I had to explain the regression assumptions and residual-style checks as I discussed the results rather than just report the numbers. The second half foc…

The Voleon Group Software Engineer interview: medium LeetCode-style screen

My interview process felt surprisingly smooth compared with what I've experienced elsewhere. After a straightforward recruiter-to-technical flow, I could use a portal to track my progress through the stages. That made the process feel organized instead of stressful. The technical screen was fairly standard: a LeetCode-style problem in the medium range. The engineering interviewers were generally…

The Voleon Group Software Engineer interview with a 45-minute LeetCode screen

After a short recruiter screening, I entered a structured technical process. The first technical screen began with a quick behavioral check, with just enough time to walk through my background, and then moved straight into a LeetCode-style coding problem. I had about 45 minutes and had to write the code end to end, including handling input and output. The rest of the process consisted of coding-h…

The Voleon Group Data Scientist: pleasant interviews, below-market offer

The interviews were organized, and the conversations themselves were pleasant. I genuinely liked the people I met. The structure had the same feel. The technical and communication portions weren't chaotic, and after each step I felt that the interviewers understood me. The process hit a hard wall when compensation came up. Even though I was moving forward as a potential hire, the pay they offered…

The Voleon Group Data Scientist interview with about an hour and a half of live coding

The first interview centered on live coding, and that shaped how I approached the rest of the day. It wasn't a verbal question-and-answer session where I could rely on talking through concepts. I had to implement the work and reason through it in real time. The topics included data manipulation, EDA, and modeling. They were checking whether I could connect the statistics to the actual constructio…

The Voleon Group Data Scientist interview on Python and modeling

I went through a fairly typical multi-round process, with a couple of technical and coding interviews in Python followed by a behavioral round. The technical portion was thorough and broad. It covered several aspects of data cleaning and modeling instead of focusing on one narrow skill. The Python and pandas questions were manageable, depending on the interviewer. The work wasn't presented as imp…

The Voleon Group Quantitative Analyst interview on statistics and machine learning

My process started with a phone screening with another PhD. The conversation quickly turned to statistics and math questions, and it felt direct and high level. I also got the sense that the interviewer wasn't especially enthusiastic about the day-to-day work, so I asked directly about flexibility and how new hires were assigned. I was told the role wasn't very flexible and that initial group pla…

The Voleon Group Data Scientist interview: Python, data analysis, and model building

My process involved a lot of rounds and felt very thorough, almost standardized. After an initial step, I had two technical interviews followed by two soft-skill interviews focused on project and team management. The topics varied, but the structure stayed consistent. I was evaluated across several dimensions rather than only on coding. The technical interviews centered on Python coding tasks tha…

The Voleon Group Data Scientist interview with five technical rounds

I started with an HR conversation that was fairly straightforward, mostly about fit and why I was interested. What stood out was how quickly the process moved into a technical sequence. I went through something like five rounds of technical interviews. The HR portion included basic questions such as why I wanted the position. The technical rounds kept coming back to live coding. I was allowed to…

What are interview experiences?

An interview experience is a candidate's own account of a hiring loop — not a question bank entry. It tells you the shape of the process: how many rounds there were, what each round actually tested, how long the gaps between them ran, and what the recruiter said at the end. That context is the part a question list cannot give you.

How to read them

Weight recent write-ups more heavily — interview loops change, often within a year. Read several for the same company and role rather than one: a single account tells you what one interviewer asked, while five tell you what the bar is. Note the outcome badge too, since a rejection write-up usually explains the gap far more precisely than an offer one.
